The Buddhist Caves of Uperkot Gujarat

The Buddhist caves in Gujarat are situated around Uperkot. The cave here is a fine example of Buddhist architecture and is built from top to bottom. It was constructed in the year 319 BC and remained in its original form till the 6th century AD. Later it was discarded according to the historical stories. This cave was re-discovered in its present form in the year 976 AD. These caves are actually monastic quarters carved out of rock. Many of these ruins provide an insight into the glorious past of the fort here. The fort has two step-wells circulars in shape which were used to store water. Once you go down the 120 steps of the Adi-Kadi Vav, you reach the water level. The Navghan Kuvo also has circular steps and was designed to help with stand sieges. The Jama Masjid inside the fort was constructed on 140 pillars. There is a small staircase here that will take you on top. The view from the terrace is a stunning view of the Junagarh town. The historical sites at the Uperkot takes you back to the bygone era. Tis is no doubt a paradise for a retrophiliac.
