Beautiful Svalbard island Norway
Svalbard is a tiny island 1500km off coast of Norway. The total population here is only 2700. The major city here is Longyearbyen. Svalbard is not an easy destination to reach. There is an Art Museum here which gives an insight to the history of Svalbard. The currency here is the Norwegian krone. This tiny island looks stunning with its snow-cladded mountains and the calm serene sea. The people here depend mainly on mining and tourism to earn their livelihood. Children selling fossils of shell fish and leaves is a common sight here. The cost of such fossils is 10 Euro. Svalbard is famous for the global seed vault. The suitable climate was one of the reasons to build this vault here in 2008. It was a gift to the world by the Norwegian government. This is actually a seed bank which stores seeds from many crops all over the world. This vault was built to ensure that the seeds remain safe in times of global crisis or calamities. This vault is built on top of a mountain using the latest technology in rooms with temperature as low as -22 degrees Celsius. Even in the absence of electricity, these seeds will remain safe for almost a thousand years! Another major attraction here is the giant letterbox dedicated to Santa Claus. It is the world’s biggest letterbox. There is also a house and a store built next to it for Santa Claus. The letterbox has flags from many countries posted on it including India.
